 Bookmarks
One of the most popular forms was the bookmark; they were given as
gifts, made for friends and lovers and allowed the giver to express
themselves. Bookmarks carried many messages such as pious reminders,
biblical quotes, sentiments of love or admiration, wishes for
remembrance and names. Most often stitched in an oblong form many
antique examples bear no backing or mounting while others have been
mounted on wonderful silk ribbons to hide the reverse side of the
stitching while the addition length made the readers place easier to
