STEP 7: Finishing

Making a Basket
Make liners for the backside of the embroidered panels by tracing around a panel; trim 3/16” off of all sides for each liner. Set the liners aside.

Cut four pieces of ribbon (4mm or 7 mm) each about 20 inches long. Thread one piece and insert the needle in the center hold at the bottom of one stitched panel and the center hole at the bottom of one side of the base panel, leaving a 10 inch tail. Working to the right and keeping the ribbon from twisting, lace the two pieces together by stitching through every hole of the bottom of the stitched panel and the base panel until the corner is reached. Join the left side of one nonstitched panel to the right side of the stitched panel by lacing every other hole to the top of the panels; remove the needle. Return to the bottom of the first stitched panel, thread the ribbon tail in the needle, and continue lacing by working to the left to finish joining the bottom of the first stitched panel to the base panel. After lacing to the corners of both pieces, add the right side of the remaining nonstitched panel to the left side of the first stitched panel and lace together. At this point, you will have attached three panels and used only one piece of ribbon. Lace the remaining stitched panel to the base and nonstitched panels in the same manner as the first stitched panel. Lace the two remaining pieces of ribbon on the nonstitched panels in the same manner; when lacing along the sides, stitch in the alternate holes left empty by the first pass of the ribbon. Tie small bows from the remaining ribbon tails at the top of the panels and trim the ribbon tails at the top of the panels and trim the ribbon tails at an angle. Run a length of the tape along the left and right edges as well as the curved top edge of the lining pieces of paper; center and press adhesive side to the back of the stitched panels.

Forming a Pincushion in a Tokens and Trifles™ Sewing Card Basket
If so desired cut panels of decorative paper or card stock to cover the wrong side of the stitched panels, then lace sides of basket with 4mm or 1/4 inch ribbon.

Make a pouch of either BB’s or poly beads, set into the bottom of pincushion for weight if desired.

Cut a 7 inch circle of fabric and a 2 1/2 inch square of cardboard.
Pile some fiberfill or wool batting on the square. With a needle and thread, stitch a running stitch in the the outer edge of the fabric, place the fiberfill and cardboard into the center of the fabric circle and draw up to enclose the stuffing, secure with a few stitches. You can lace side to side on the wrong side of the cushion to more evenly distribute gathers if desired.

Push gently into basket. (A piece of double stick tape on the top of the weighted pouch will help hold pincushion top into the basket. You can also stitch the corners of the fabric to the lacing ribbons on the basket to help secure.

Alternatively this basket may be simply used as an ‘Orts" basket.
