How-To

STEP 7: Finishing

Making a Box from Tokens and Trifles™ sewing cards
From decorative paper, cut one heart shaped piece to fit just within running-stitch border of sewing card. Lightly glue to wrong side of stitched rose-motif card.

Set sewing machine to longest stitch length. With an unthreaded needle, sew along long side of cardstock, 1/8” from the edge, to create lacing holes for box sides.

If making sides for the heart shape, fold cardstock in half lengthwise to create pointed tip at bottom of box. For rectangular shapes, each corner will need to be creased beforehand. Alight any folds with a lacing hole created by the sewing machine. Cut a 36” length of floss. Thread floss into needle, bringing needle up through bottom–center border hole of blank sewing card. Begin stitching with only half of the thread length, reserving the other half of the thread to lace in the opposite direction.

Lace the bottom sewing card to box sides, forming small triangles along the side of the box. When top of the box is reached, thread remaining end of floss into needle and repeat process for remaining box side. When the top of the box is almost reached, overlap the cardstock sides on the inside edge of the box and glue in place. Tie off ends of floss by running needle through the backstitched border on the underside of the box formed by the lacing.

To attach the top, thread an 8” length of 7-mm ribbon and thread it through straight stitches worked in the decorative edges and the same corresponding stitches on the bottom of the box. This forms a ribbon “hinge”. Tie in a box and trim tails. Form two hinges, equally spaced.

Boxes can be formed from the following styles:
  • Eyelet Rectangle
  • Eyelet Heart
  • Ivy Oval
  • Ivy Circle
